World Mental Health Day celebrated

JAMMU, Oct 9: World Mental Health was celebrated today with zeal and enthusiasm by Government College for Women, Parade Ground (Jammu) and other degree colleges.
In connection with World Mental Health Day, a week-long International webinar on the theme- ‘Holistic Health’ was organized by Government College for Women, Parade Ground in collaboration with Government Degree College (GDC) Sidhra, GDC Chenani, GDC Basohli and GDC Kakryal. The mega event had commenced on the October 4 and concluded today.
Dr Rajinder Kumar (Psychiatrist, GMC Jammu), Dr T R Raina (former HoD, Department of Blood Transfusion, GMC Jammu), Dr Mohd Muzafer Khan (Director Police Drug De-addiction Services, Srinagar), Dr Ziba Vaghri (Associate Professor, University of New Brunswick, Canada) and Dr Arun Gupta (Medical Officer, AYUSH) were eminent speakers.
Principals of the host colleges, Dr S P Sarswat (GCW Parade), Dr C K Khajuria (GDC Katra), Dr Nidhi Kotwal (GDC Basholi), Dr Pragya Khanna (GDC Chenani) and Dr Monika Sharma (GDC Sidhra) also emphasized upon the importance of healthy lifestyle.
The organizers of the program were Prof S K Dhar (GCW Parade), NSS volunteers and NCC cadets of the five colleges while the event was coordinated by Dr Piyali Arora, Dr Sunil Tanoch, Dr Shiv Mangal and Dr Punam.
The event concluded with inter-college poster cum slogan writing competition wherein Yash Paul Dogra and Sonia Katach of GDC Chenani bagged 1st and 2nd position respectively and Shallu Chalotra and Rachna of GDC Kakrayal and Sania & Anshitga Sharma of GCW Parade conjointly won the 3rd position.
Meanwhile, Psychological Counselling Cell, Career Counselling Cell and Placement Cell of Manodarpan scheme by MOI organized a webinar on the topic “Mental Health Amidst Pandemic” in collaboration with IQAC, to celebrate ‘World Mental Health Day’ at Girdhari Lal Dogra Memorial (GLDM) Degree College. The whole program was conducted under the guidance of K S Koushal, Principal of the College. More than 100 students and faculty members virtually attended the webinar.
The Resource Person for the webinar was Dr Syed Shehna (Assistant Professor in Psychology and Psychological Counsellor of Manodarpan, GCW Gandhi Nagar, Jammu), who highlighted various factors which have contributed to the deteriorating mental health of people in general due to the pandemic. Dr Davinder Kour (convener, Psychological Counselling Cell of the College) emphasized the role of education in maintaining mental health by quoting Aristotle that education is the creation of sound mind in a sound body.
