JAMMU, Mar 15: In connection with the World Kidney Day, Nephrology Department of Govt Medical College Jammu organized a function here the other day.
Dr S K Bali, Head of Department (Nephro), GMC Jammu while addressing the gathering informed about renal injury or failure and prevention to be taken if the disease is detected. He disclosed that renal failure of AKI is a sudden decrease in renal functioning occurring over a period of hours to days. Urine output decreases to less than 400 ml per day in majority of the patients.
He further disclosed that AKI is estimated to occur in 5 to 10 % of hospitalized patients and 35 to 40 % of critically sick patients admitted in hospitals. Dr Bali said risk factor for developing acute kidney injury is presence of underlying chronic renal disease, elderly patients, diabetes mellitus, volume depletion and use of pain killers. AKI is associated with high rate of morbidity and mortality. In critically sick patients with severe AKI, requiring dialysis support mortality is from 50 to 70 %. He informed that HMC unit of Nephrology, performed 2000 Haemodialysis and 50 Pertoneal dialysis last year.
The function was attended by faculty members, Registrars and PG students of various other departments. The day is observed every year all over the world for creating awareness about various kidney diseases and the theme of this year is acute kidney injury (AKI).
