JAMMU, Mar 13: World Kidney Day was celebrated by the Nephrology Department of Govt Medical College, Jammu at Super Specialty Hospital (SSH) here today.
Principal Medical College Jammu, Dr Shashi Gupta was chief guest while the programme was organised under the guidance and supervision of Dr S K Bali, HoD Nephrology Department GMC Jammu. HoD Cardiology Department of GMC, Dr Sushil Sharma, HoD Urology Deptt, Dr Sunil Gupta and several other HoDs were also present.
The day is celebrated every year on the second Thursday of March all over the world. The theme of this year is ‘Chronic renal disease and aging’. It was observed that elderly people from about 10% of the total population at present and the society need to take care of them and their kidneys.
Dr Bali in his welcome and key note address informed the gathering that many changes happen to kidneys after one crosses the age of 50 or 60 years in life. These changes may be in structure, physiology and functional ability. Some diseases may accelerate this age related loss of renal functions like high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, dyslipedemia, obesity and use of nephrotoxic drugs like analgesics.
He pointed out that kidney disease usually have a few symptoms and it may progress slowly and go unnoticed till it reaches advanced stage. The patients of CKD ( chronic kidney disease) & their families, diabetes, hypertensives need special investigations and management. Renal transplant, dialysis and CAPD (home dialysis) are the three main options available for the patients, who have advanced chronic renal failure, Dr Bali cautioned.
Dr Sushil Sharma, HoD Cardiology Department also addressed the gathering and educated about the possible impact on the cardiac system of a chronic kidney patient. He also informed about waning signals within the human body in this regard.
The function was also attended by Medical Superintendent of SSH, Dr Reyaz Ahmed, Medical Superintendent GMC Hospital Dr Ravinder Ratanpal, Med Supt of CD Hospital Dr Manoj Chalotra, Dr K K Koul (HoD), Dr Ghanshyam (HoD), Dr Bela Mahajan (HoD), Dr Pooja (HoD Cardiac Anaesthesia), several consultants, students and nursing and other staff members besides kidney patients and their attendants.
