World Environment Day celebrated with enthusiasm

JAMMU, June 4: World Environment Day was celebrated today with great enthusiasm by various educational, cultural and other institutions.
Vishwa Bharati College of Education celebrated World Environment Day in College campus by slogan writing competition, awareness programme and plantation drive. Prof AN Sadhu, Secretary, College of Education was the chief guest on the occasion while Principal of the College, Prof Sunita Kampassi, was also present.
In slogan writing competition, Tsering Dolkar, Sarishta and Roshan Thakur were adjudged as 1st, 2nd and 3rd by the judges. In awareness programme, the main highlights were speeches by Prof Bharati Bhat and Salinder Singh, documentary by Bunty Kumar and poem by Siyma. Later, each one present on the occasion planted a tree around the college campus, as a part of plantation drive.
The day was also celebrated in Delhi Public School, Leh, where a special morning assembly was organized, which started with the speech on the topic followed by a skit and a song by the school’s Eco-Club whereby the students were motivated and aware about the environment, ill effects of deforestation, global warming, preservation and conservation of environment. Principal of the school, Subhash Kumar Baldotra also spoke on the importance of the day.
Sai International School, Hiranagar celebrated the World Environment Day with great fervour and gaiety at School. SD Swatantra, Chairman, Enviro-nment Impact Assessment Authority, J&K, graced the occasion as chief guest. The tiny tots of the School came in different fancy dresses related to the safety of the environment. They communicated the message to save the environment through poems and slogans. The chief guest planted a tree on the school campus and advised the students to follow the example.
To celebrate World Environment Day, Bhartiya Lok Sangeet Kala Sansthan (BLSKS) in coordination with Sangam Tru Art production and ESRM, presented musical play “Ped Lagao Desh Bachao” at Open Air Theatre, Durga Bhawan, Janipur. The play commenced with specially prepared songs on the theme like ‘Ped Lagao Desh Bachao”, “Hariyali laye prithvi bachaen Hara bhra ho sansaar humara”, “Pardooshan ko rakhho door, jivan ho shakti se bharpoor”. The music of the play was by Raju Bajgal. The singers, musicians and actors who performed in the play were Usha Handoo, Raju Bajgal, Rajni Gupta, HemRaj, KK Joshi, MC Kotwal and Kajal.
On the occasion of World Environment Day, J&K Centre for Environmental Studies, Press Club of Jammu, expressed serious concern over growing cancer cases in the State and urged the State Government to take immediate steps to check such cases. Alleging that increasing traffic is one of the main reasons for environmental pollution, Chairman of the Centre, Ashwani Kumar, said that immediate steps should be taken to check the increasing traffic pollution.
