World Cancer Day observed across J&K

JAMMU, Feb 4: The World Cancer Day was observed today by various health institutions across Jammu and Kashmir.
In this connection, interactive lectures were organized by Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu. Principal, Dr Sunanda Raina was the chief guest on the occasion. The theme of the event was “Prevention of Cancer with Respect to Lifestyle”. The programme was attended by guest public who were mainly relatives of cancer patients.
Dr Vasanta Kohli (Consultant Nutrition) spoke on the role of nutrition and diet in prevention and treatment of cancer while Dr TR Raina (Ex-HoD Blood Bank, Jammu) spoke on “Science of Management of Cancer through Yoga”. Dr Ashutosh Gupta, Prof and HoD Radiotherapy made the public aware of the modifiable risk factor of cancer. GMC Administrator, Amit Sharma, MS Dr Dara Singh, Dr Dinesh (HoD PSM) and senior oncology faculty members including Dr Rahul Sharma, Dr Shabab, Dr Swaran Katoch and Dr Sunny Jandial participated in the programme.

GMC Kathua observed World Cancer Day by organizing a Cancer Survivor Meet, a Psycho Oncology session, a Preventive Oncology Clinic and an Awareness Drive. The event was inaugurated by Principal GMC Kathua Dr Suleman Choudhary who also initiated signature campaign launched by Department of Radiation Oncology. The event witnessed honouring the cancer survivors, distribution of free supportive medicines and awareness literature. Dr Pawan Kumar Radiation Oncologist gave detailed power point presentation on World Cancer Day and need for awareness in cancer care. Dr Deepak Abrol presented vote of thanks.
Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Soura Srinagar organized an awareness programme in SKIMS Auditorium on eve of World Cancer Day. This year’s theme was “I am and I will”. The event was attended by Faculty, Senior Residents, Postgraduates, Junior Residents, Paramedical/Nursing Staff, Cancer Patients and their families and Nursing students of SKIMS. Speaking on the occasion, Director SKIMS & EOSG, Prof A G Ahangar stressed for increased awareness among people for common cancers prevalent in Kashmir, preventive measures to be taken, life style modifications and change in mindset regarding Cancer management. He also stressed for spreading awareness regarding risk factors especially smoking in colleges/universities, work places or at home.
