JAMMU, May 31: Women’s Collective of Jammu and Kashmir in collaboration with the Department of Lifelong Learning, University of Jammu,   organized a workshop on “Declining Sex Ratio in Jammu Region”, here today.
Prof Rekha Chowdhary, former Dean Research Studies, JU, while speaking on the “Declining Sex ratio in the State of Jammu and Kashmir”, presented facts and figures and various elements responsible for foeticide. Declining sex ratio, she asserted, is not a ‘stand-alone’ phenomenon and is linked with larger context of the inferior status of women in our society.

“It is also a reflection of the widespread prevalence of ‘violence against women’; the continuity of the traditional notions of women being the ‘liability’ and ‘second’ and ‘secondary’ sex; the lack of opportunities; choices and access to women; and the related notions,” said Professor Chowdhary.
Prof Abha Chouhan, renowned Sociologist and former head, Department of Sociology, JU, said in the conflict-ridden state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), the most crucial social concerns remain invisible since much of the public debate revolves around emotive political issues. One such concern which has remained out of the public domain relates to the declining sex ratio in this state, she added.
Dr Kavita Suri, Director and Head, Department of Lifelong Learning, JU, said there are many factors responsible for this trend: age old customs and rituals, son preference and neglect of the girl child, availability of techniques for feticide etc. Dr Anupama Vohra Associate Professor, Department of English, DDE, University of Jammu spoke on “Women’s depictions in Short Stories: A literary Review of Dogri folklore”. Madhuri Rajput spoke on “cultural factors for the declining sex ratio in Jammu region”. Dr Saranjeet Kour made a presentation on a survey related to domestic violence that resulted in declining sex ratio. Meesha Bhagat, Mohd Sardar Bhatti and Shveta, all from Department of Political Science, threw light on patriarchal values.
