JAMMU, Oct 28: Pradesh Mahila Congress wing president and former MLA Indu Pawar has appealed to the women to come forward and actively participate in coming Panchayat elections.
Addressing a meeting of Congress activists in Samba today, Pawar said that Panchayati Raj is the base of our democracy as more than 75% of our people reside in villages. It is contribution of our rural voters who elect the Government of time and moreover, Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi always laid stress for strengthening of Panchayati Raj system in our country.
She said the participation of women in Panchayati Raj was ensured by Congress Governments and Late Rajiv Ganhi brought a Bill passed towards reservation of women in Panchayat local bodies and this has resulted in increased participation of women. She said that Congress always implemented schemes for welfare of villages, farmers, men, women and children. As a result of these efforts country has made progress in all the segments of life, may it be health, education, employment and other developmental activities.
Pawar further said implementation of MG NREGA has helped in changing fate of rural un-employed. This helped poor farmers, rural un-employed labour in getting employment in their own areas and migration of labour has reduced, its effects are visible in J&K and Punjab where number of migrant workers have reduced as people are getting employment locally in their own states under MG NREGA.
She said Congress has always desired participation of women in Panchayat, Local Bodies, Legislature etc. She also appealed for more and more women to come in the Congress fold and contribute for strengthening of democracy. This way women can claim their share and contribute for development of our country and work shoulder to shoulder with their male colleagues. The participation of women in Panchayts etc. will empower them to take decision in development of their areas also improve quality of life of people living there.
Senior Congress Women wing leaders Vandana Makhnotra and Sunita Devi also spoke on the occasion.
