Woman shot dead, 5 arrested

SRINAGAR, Oct 28: Militants tonight shot dead a woman in South Kashmir while seven persons including a cop and militant were arrested during two separate operations in Kashmir valley.
Militants tonight shot dead 45-year old Zeba Bano alias Baby Jaan alias Beeba wife of Mohammad Yusuf Mattoo at Naina, Batpora Pulwama in South Kashmir.
Beeba was called out by the militants and fired at outside her house. She was immediately rushed to hospital where she succumbed. She is survived by four daughters, a son and husband.
Superintendent of Police Pulwama, Rayees Ahmad, told Excelsior that two militants came on a motor cycle and fired at her indiscriminately outside her house. They left her in a pool of blood and fled away under the cover of darkness.
She was removed to hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Police, Army and CRPF reached the spot and launched massive operation against the assailants.
Police today arrested five persons including a police constable from Bemina area of Srinagar along with arms and contraband during a raid. They are believed to be involved in drug and weapon smuggling.
The arrested persons have been identified as Constable Khursheed Chauhan, Aalam Din Bhat, Yasir Bhat, Irshad Sheikh and Ashraf Sheikh. They were arrested by police and SOG during a raid at Bemina.
Eight grenades and one AK 47 rifle were recovered from them besides five kilogram of Brown Sugar. Police have registered a case and started investigations further into the matter.
Sources said that these persons are involved in smuggling of weapons and narcotics from across the LoC. They said that these persons are smuggling weapons from the LoC and are handing them over to militants and besides this they are also drug smugglers.
In the meantime, police today said that acting on a specific information regarding the presence of militants in Hamdanpora, Rampora in district Kulgam, security forces apprehended a militant and a person who provided him logistic support.
Police said that district Police Kulgam along with 1- Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and 18th Battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched an operation in village Hamdan Pora, Rampora.
“During search operation, one HM militant Manzoor Ahmad Khan alias Mana Khan alias Waseem alias Jafar son of Ghulam Nabi Khan resident of Dhobi Mohalla Batamaloo, Srinagar was arrested. He is involved in number of subversive activities and has got recycled into militant ranks a couple of months ago”, Police said.
One pistol, grenade and other ammunition was recovered from his possession. One Mohammad Yaqoob Dar son of Abdul Gani Dar resident of Hamdan Pora, Rampora who provided logistic support to militant was also apprehended from the spot by police.
Police has registered a case (FIR number 247/2016 under Section 307, 109 RPC, 7/25 A Act) and investigation was taken up.
