Srinagar, Mar 5: Residents of Sonarkhul-Nawab Bazar in downtown Srinagar today lodged protest against the alleged negligent death of an expectant mother during a surgery at Sheikh-ul-Alam Hospital, Karan Nagar.
Talking to Excelsior, a delegation of the residents demanded stern action against a gynaecologist namely Dr. Parveen who they said carried out the surgery a day before the expected delivery of Rehana Reyaz wife of Reyaz Ahmad. The residents said that Health Department should hold a probe in the case so that the reasons behind the death are known to the people.
“Rehana was under the supervision of Dr. Parveen and she was expected to give birth to a child on March 5. However, the doctor asked her to come to the hospital on March 4 so that her surgery is carried out. The surgery was carried without the consent of her husband and she died while the surgery was being performed,” said the residents.
The residents said the hospital authorities instead of seeking consent from the husband of Rehana got the consent of her father. They said Rehana suffered huge blood loss during the surgery and her family members were asked to arrange for the blood units. They added that the arrangement of blood units did not yield any result as Rehana died due to the alleged callousness of the doctor.
Residents said that the hospital authorities had called in the police to thwart any protest that would erupt once it is declared that the expectant mother had died. They said that the sponge containing blood stains was recovered from the uterus of the expectant mother adding that it depicts the callousness of the hospital more so the doctor.
“The post mortem team arrived after initial delay and it was they who found the blood stained sponge inside the uterus of the body. Some of the parts have been taken away for biopsy as part of the examination. Our demand is that the post mortem report should be made public at the earliest followed by action against the culprits,” said the residents.
Deputy Director, Health Services Kashmir, Dr. Mohammad Shafi told Excelsior that a team comprising of the doctors has been formed to ascertain the reasons behind the death of Rehana. Dr. Shafi said that action if any against the hospital or the doctor would be taken after the receipt of the report by the team.
“A team comprising of Assistant Director, Health Services Kashmir, a gynaecologist, A-grade specialist and an expert in the post mortem has been framed to probe the matter. The team would investigate the whole matter and then report it to the Directorate of Health Services, Kashmir. As and when the report comes we would act accordingly,” said Dr. Shafi.
