SRINAGAR, May 25: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief spokesperson, Dr Mehbooba Beg today said the tangible improvement in security situation in the State is needed to be reciprocated with matching measures like revocation of the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) so that people feel the real change on the ground.
“The fact that the people of J&K are the biggest custodians of the State’s interests has to be recognized and their legitimate aspirations voiced through democratic means have to be respected to address the issues of trust-deficit and alienation,” Mr Beg said in a statement issued here today.
Mr Beg said this is of fundamental importance to allow the democratic institutions in the State to grow and flourish without having the feeling of being in the protective custody. He said revocation of AFSPA is crucial to allowing the people get the much-needed relief on the security front.
PDP leader claimed that the State Government under the visionary leadership of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has embarked on a mission to address the developmental and governance deficit perpetuated by the NC-Congress coalition during the past 6 years. “The Government has to not only undo the damage done by the previous regime, but has to get going a bettered process of governance with accountability and transparency as the key elements,” he said and added that the people will see the desired results on the ground soon.
Mr Beg expressed that the new recruitment policy has been formulated by the Government with the objective of fast-tracking filling up of vacancies which have been mounting despite the presence of various institutionalized recruiting agencies like SSRB, PSC and District level boards. He said all the recruitments under the new policy would be made in the most transparent manner with merit as the only criteria for selection.
