Winter-like weather conditions in Kashmir as upper heights receive snow

SRINAGAR:
Winter-like weather conditions prevailed in Kashmir valley, where the upper reaches experienced fresh snowfall and plains, including the summer capital, Srinagar, were lashed by heavy rains, leading to a drop in the mercury.
However, after rain during the past 24 hours, the Sun was playing hide and seek in the valley though the sky remained cloudy with icy cold winds blowing, sources said here today. Meanwhile, the operation of second phase of Gandola Cable Car (GCC) from Gulmarg base camp to Affarwat, the highest skiing point, remained suspended for two days, much to the disappointment of the tourists.  However, GCC officials said it was done for precautionary reasons.
If the weather permits, the second phase will be made operational today, the sources said, adding that the Affarwat and other heights in the Gulmarg sector received fresh snowfall resulting in chilly weather conditions.
A Met department spokesman said isolated rain or thundershowers would occur in the state till Sunday. However, there is chance of dry weather from Monday, he said. The mercury witnessed further drop in the Kashmir valley, where the upper reaches experienced fresh snowfall and plains had moderate to heavy rains, disrupting normal life. Chilly weather conditions continued in the famed ski resort of Gulmarg due to snow on upper reaches resulting in further drop in the mercury. (AGENCIES)
