In order to diffuse the prevailing tension, police today registered an FIR against the constable who opened fire yesterday at agitating Sikhs demanding to hold Samagam in remembrance of Khalistan extremist Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale in which a youth was killed in Gadigarh area here.
“The family members of the deceased agreed for the post-mortem after an FIR was registered against the constable Mukesh Saini,” a police official here said.
He said protesting Sikhs were demanding registration of a case against the constable, suspension of a senior police officer, compensation to the family and holding of Samagam in remembrance of Bhindrawale tomorrow.
Protest started on Wednesday morning when police removed the posters of Bhindrawale in Gadigarh area which were pasted as a part of three-day Samagam while the tension intensified yesterday when a youth fell, prey to bullet in police firing.
Meanwhile, demonstration continued in various parts of Jammu district particularly in Sikh-dominated localities against the killing of a youth.
District administration has also imposed Section 144 of CrPC as preventive measures and ordered closure of all educational institutions in all five districts of Jammu region.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh and other leaders have appealed to people to maintain calm. (AGENCIES)
