Weather improves, Jhelum below danger mark

SRINAGAR, Apr 8: The water level of River Jhelum and other tributaries receded further today as weather improved here while stranded vehicles along Srinagar-Jammu National Highway (NH) were allowed to proceed due to improvement in road condition.
There was no rainfall or snow in the Valley today and Sun also came out after nearly four days. With the improvement in weather, the water level at all three gauges of River Jhelum receded further. According to Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department, the water level at Sangam gauge in South Kashmir was 14.60 feet at 7 pm this evening.
Similarly, the water level at Ram Munshi Bagh gauge in Srinagar was 17.35 feet and at Asham gauge, it was 12.33 feet. The water level in tributaries including Vishow Nallah at Khudwani was 4.39m, 0.46m at Rambiyara Nallah at Wachi and 0.60, at Lidder Nallah in Batkoot. With the improvement in weather and receding of water level, the people heaved a sigh of relief.
The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained closed for the traffic today again but with the improvement in weather, the stranded vehicles were this evening allowed to proceed towards their respective destinations. SSP National Highway told Excelsior that there was only one landslide today at Hingni in Banihal sector and that has been cleared.
He said yesterday there was rainfall at regular intervals in most of the areas of the National Highway, especially between Jawahar Tunnel and Ramban, which resulted in fresh landslide in Ramsoo area and shooting stones at Panthyal. “Today we cleared the road and if the weather remains good, we will allow normal traffic on the Highway,” the SSP said.
The Meteorological Department, meanwhile, predicted isolated rainfall forecast for April 8. However, there is dry weather forecast till April 11. Despite improvement in weather, the mercury in Srinagar and other parts of the Valley continues to remain below normal. The day temperature in Srinagar was recorded 12.6 degree Celsius, six notches below normal, while night temperature settled at 4.8 degree Celsius. Qazigund recorded 10.1 degree Celsius maximum temperature and minimum temperature at 2.4 degree Celsius.
While maximum temperature in Pahalgam was recorded 6.4 degree Celsius, the night temperature settled at 0.4 degree Celsius. The day temperature in Kupwara was recorded 12.4 degree Celsius while night temperature was 1.6 degree Celsius. The maximum temperature in Kokernag was recorded 9.1 degree Celsius and the night temperature settled at 0.3 degree Celsius.
Gulmarg in North Kashmir was coldest in Valley where minimum temperature settled at -4 degree Celsius. In Leh, the day temperature was recorded 6.9 degree Celsius and night temperature at -2.8 degree Celsius. The neighbouring Kargil recorded 6.4 degree Celsius day temperature while the night temperature settled at 0.5 degree Celsius.
