JAMMU, May 30: Chairman All J&K Transport Welfare Association, T S Wazir has urged upon the Government to provide financial assistance to the drivers and cleaners and waive off the bank interest, insurance fee of the vehicles, providing some relief to the transporters facing acute crisis due to lockdown over Covid-19.
Talking to media persons here today, Wazir said due to lock down, the operation of all types of transport vehicles has been stalled. Hardly 10 % of the load carriers on operating for essential supplies. He said the driver and cleaners of the vehicles are facing starvation but no financial assistance is being provided to them.
Wazir pointed out that the Government has allowed operation of flights, many trains and SRTC fleet but the private public transport and goods carriers besides other vehicles are not being allowed to operate. Even the Government has opened wine shops. The families of vehicle operators are dependent only on daily earnings. Under such circumstances how they will feed their families.
The Transport Union leader said he had also written to the Lt Governor some time back about the plight of the transport operators but received no response at all. The SRTC vehicles are operating with full capacity but the private transport has been left to face discrimination, Wazir added.
He urged upon the Government and the State Administration to allow operation of all types of vehicles with some guidelines, provide financial package for the survival of the drivers/ cleaners and their families besides allied workers of Transport industry, waive off interest of the loans taken by transporters for vehicles, waive off insurance and other fee during the lock down period. He said the State Administration must take up the issue with the Central Government in this regard.
