JAMMU, July 7: Water level rose in several Nullahs in Leh town following melting of snow in upper reaches due to rise in temperature. Water entered several houses and shops in the evening leading to panic among the people but by late tonight, the water level had started decreasing, which eased the situation.
Deputy Commissioner, Leh Saugat Biswas and SSP Leh Sunil Gupta told the Excelsior late tonight after several hours tour in the town along with men and machinery that situation was now under control but added that administration was still on alert.
“We have put our entire men and machinery into operation to plug the breaches and control water from entering houses and shops,’’ the two district chiefs of civil and police administration said, adding that there were no casualties in the increased water level.
However, property in some houses and shops suffered damage due to entering of water following breaches in the Nullahs. Some people shifted to safety during the day as water level started rising. However, most of them returned tonight.
Sources said the district administration of Leh has pressed into service entire men and machinery at its command to plug breaches in Nullahs and prevent water from entering houses and shops of the people.
According to sources, water level suddenly rose in the Nullahs after rise in temperature led to melting of snow.
Worthwhile to mention here that cloudbursts in Leh had led to huge devastation in mountain locked town leading to over 200 deaths and massive loss of property in 2010.
