Sir,
Two phase election process concluded recently in our State. These two phases gave a glimpse of the voting pattern of different sections of the society.
The majority of the younger voters falling in the age group of 18 to 35 years of age preferred to vote for BJP led by Narendra Modi irrespective of qualities of a candidate while as the elder voters were inclined towards leftist parties.
The majority of the respondents having higher education preferred educated and honest candidates. There was not any difference between males and females with respect to factors considered for the selection of a particular candidate for voting.
The majority of the voters belonging to rightist parties seemed to be more rational in making their choice of political party and candidate while as the people belonging to leftist parties were more emotional and irrational. The migrant Kashmiri Pandits looked quite indifferent towards election with the remarks that there was none to redress their grievances in the parliament. Some of them told that there was no policy for their resettlement in election manifesto of any political party and as such, the election was meaningless for them. Most of the respondents were happy with the style of Modi and were not satisfied with the performance of the MLAs while as Congress Party was given secondary choice for want of a competent national leader. It may be concluded that the Indian voters are well aware of their political rights and duties. However, there is a need for political education of the people.
