TIKRI/UDHAMPUR, Apr 12: National Conference today sought vote and support for the secular forces in the ongoing elections to Lok Sabha, saying it will be endorsement to preserving the composite ethos of Jammu and Kashmir.
Making a fervent appeal to the electors of Kathua-Udhampur-Doda Constituency to come forward in a big way and cast their votes in favour of the Congress candidate Vikramaditya Singh, senior National Conference leaders said the State is passing through a most difficult phase and time has come to isolate divisive and reactionary elements who are against the unity and diversity of the three regions and harmony between diverse religions and cultures.
They assailed the BJP for exploiting religious sentiments of the people to further their political agenda and said these machinations are aimed at creating wedge between different segments of the society, which is against the secular fabric of the State.
Besides Provincial President Devender Singh Rana, the election rally was addressed by State Secretary Surjeet Singh Slathia, former MLC Brijmohan Sharma, former MLC B. R. Kundal and the Congress candidate Vikramaditya Singh.
“We have to maintain at all costs the unity and tranquility, which is at peril due to politics of division and hate”, Rana said, adding that National Conference has all along withstood challenges by offering numerous sacrifices to uphold the dignity of the people, irrespective of religion, caste or region.
He said the party has a track record of serving people of all the three regions and this spirit is needed to be sustained and promoted by weathering all odds unitedly. He said focused attention is needed to be given to fulfill the deep yearning of people to live dignified and peaceful life.
In his address, Surjeet Singh Slathia said that divisive politics has harmed the interests of the State and time has come to bid adieu to such political culture, which is alien to its secular fabric.
Former MLC Brijmohan Sharma called for isolating opportunistic political entities, saying they pose grave threat to the pluralistic ethos of the state .
Addressing the rally, former Chief Secretary and ex-MLC B. R Kundal said the voters have to make a choice between progressive forces and those believing in myopic politics, aimed at dividing the society on the basis of religion, caste and region.
The party leaders hoped that the people will reject the reactionary and backward looking policies of the BJP and support the decision of the National Conference leadership in supporting the Congress in the constituency to avoid division of votes and defeating the polarizing elements.
Expressing his gratitude to the National Conference leadership for extending support to the Congress for the two Jammu Parliamentary seats, Vikramaditya Singh exuded confidence that sagacious voters of the constituency will give a befitting reply to the BJP for failing on the deliverance front and breaking all the promises made during 2014 elections.
