JAMMU, July 25: In a bid to promote Science and Technology in the State, the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology, University of Jammu in technical collaboration with Powai Labs Technology Private Limited, has set up a high ended Linux based ‘IMAGE’ Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) circuits and Embedded System Lab at Jammu University.
Aiming at training the students of this region in the specialized area of Electronic Design Automation (EDA), this project would enable the students to implement, test and simulate the electronic circuits by using very High Speed IC Hardware Description Language (VHDL) and Hardware Description Language Simulator (GHDL).
“An educational programme VLSI is the first of its kind in J&K as also in North India, with an exception of Kurukshetra University. It would be of great help to our students and the faculty in the long run and highly beneficial for the M Tech aspirants,” said Mohan Paul Singh Ishar, Vice Chancellor Jammu University while talking to Excelsior and expressing satisfaction over the establishment of the project.
He said the objective of setting up of such a Lab is to provide an in-depth training to the Computer Science and IT related students in the area of VLSI and Embedded systems, adding that the students undergoing higher courses in Computer Science and IT would be highly benefited from the facilities provided in this Lab.
The project has been sponsored by the State Government with an estimated cost of Rs 4 crore.
Prof Vibhakar Mansotra, Head, Department of Computer Science and Information Technology (DCS IT), Jammu University is the Course Director, while Dr Pawanesh Abrol, Associate Prof, DCS IT, JU is the Course Coordinator.
It is pertinent to mention here that the project which is aiming at acquainting the engineering and other graduates having basic knowledge in the field of electronics with latest hardware and software technology for electronic system design, testing and simulation, apart from providing opportunity to the students to work on latest technology and increasing employability of the aspirants, would be highly beneficial to the State of Jammu and Kashmir, which otherwise is lagging behind in technical field due to lack of infrastructure. On an average, around 500 students graduate from Government and Private Engineering Colleges every year and in addition to these institutions, the region has five Universities which are also imparting Masters and Bachelors degrees in CS, EC, IT and related subjects, however due to lack of further avenues for higher and technological courses, these students were unable to cope up with the technological advancements and the project now would be of great help to these students in coping up with the same.
Meanwhile, the Department of Computer Science and IT, University of Jammu organized a valedictory function of the certificate course in VLSI and Embedded Systems. Prof Mohan Paul Singh Ishar, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu was the chief guest on the occasion, who in his address appreciated the efforts made by the Department to set up the prestigious VLSI and Embedded Systems Laboratory and launching of the Certificate Course in this specialized field.
The student participants of the course were also given certificates by the Vice-chancellor.
Prof Naresh Padha, in his address emphasized that more such course would be initiated for the benefit of the student community. He also stressed upon the students to focus on the fundamentals of the concerned subject.
Prof Vibhakar Mansotra, Head Department of Computer Science and IT and Course Director in his welcome address thanked Vice-Chancellor for his guidance and support in organization of the course.
