DODA, Oct 7: Demanding release of their pending salaries, the members of Village Defence Committees (VDCs) held protest here today.
Village Defence Committees (VDCs) were constituted to serve as security arch to defend remote and hilly villages against terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir.
The protest was led by Union District President VDC Committee Jagdave Singh, who while speaking alleged that they have not been paid salaries for the past four years.
The protestors raised slogans against the Union Territory Government.
“VDC members are not getting salaries for the past several months, which has forced them to come on road and held protest”, he added.
“While wages of SPOs have been increased to Rs 18,000 from Rs 5,000, the wages of VDC members have been kept withheld”, they added.
“VDCs were set up in the 1996 with an aim to strengthen the security of those living in remote and mountainous areas of erstwhile Doda district”, they informed.
The protestors appealed to the Lieutenant Governor to intervene and get the salaries of VDC members released from the concerned authorities.
With a warning to intensify their demonstration, the protestors dispersed.
