Upgraded MRI machine starts functioning in GMC

JAMMU, Feb 9: In a major relief to the patients, upgraded Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine has been installed in Government Medical College and Hospital.
Principal, GMC Dr Ghansham told EXCELSIOR that existing MRI machine in GMC has been upgraded and it has started functioning. He informed that presently 18 to 20 cases are being conducted on regular basis and from March 1, the number of cases will be increased to around 40 per day.
Dr Ghansham informed that the machine has been upgraded with new techniques due to which the image resolution quality has been increased. “This upgraded machine would be of immense benefit for the patients because of its additional features”, he added,
He informed that the Renal Angiography and Limbs Angiography will also be conducted now in the hospital after upgradation of the MRI machine and patients need not to visit private diagnostic centres for these facilities.
“Around Rs 3 crore have been spent for the upgradation of the machine and the life span of the machine has now been increased by around 10 years”, he disclosed, adding “six technicians and hospital staff are working from 8 am to 8 pm for conducting cases”.
An amount of Rs 2,500 is being charged for single case and for BPL, unknown cases, major accidents and people affected with militancy affected, the MRI is conducted free of cost, Dr Ghansham added.
The lone MRI machine in GMC was lying defunct for the past one month, which forced the patients to either get their tests done from Super Specialty Hospital or from private diagnostic centres.
It is pertinent to mention here that private diagnostic centres charge Rs 5,000— double from the hospital rate for the conduct of MRI and with the operational of upgraded MRI machine in GMC, the patients need not to visit the private labs.
