JAMMU, Aug 1: An unmanned cement laden truck turned turtle on Canal Road opposite Government Gandhi Memorial (GGM) Science College and later rammed into the nearby shops, resulting into loss of property.
As per police sources, a cement laden truck bearing registration number JK02AG-6881 was on its way to Sunderbani, district Rajouri from Bari-Brahmana, when the driver lost control over the steering and the vehicle turned turtle on Canal road opposite Government Gandhi Memorial (GGM) Science College early this morning.
After turning turtle, the truck skidded to some distance and then rammed into the shops on the road side, resulting into loss of property, they added.
On getting information, police party from Canal Road police Post led by SI Hilal Azhar rushed to the spot, they said, adding that the truck driver identified as Ram Kumar, son of Girdhari Lal of Bari-Brahmana was arrested and later bailed out.
The exact loss of the property could not be ascertained yet, while a case under relevant Sections has been registered at Canal Road Police Post and investigation started, they informed.
Demanding compensation, the shopkeepers lodged their protest before the Police Officials. After the assurance by the truck owner of compensation, the truck was removed from the spot and the vehicular movement was restored, which was diverted for sometime, they added.
Due to the accident and lying of the truck on the accident spot, long traffic snarls were spotted for the full day today, which continued till late evening.
The commuters had to face lots of problems and they were flaying the Traffic Department for their apathy in clearing the way by removing the truck from the accident site.
Meanwhile, the resident of Krishna Nagar held a meeting and urged the Traffic Department to make way for zebra crossings near GGM Science College and Government Girls Higher Secondary School for the convenience of the people.
They also urged the Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) to reconstruct the footpaths on both sides of the Canal Road as the same are damaged and were encroached by the shopkeepers, thereby creating problems for the pedestrians.
