UK Govt clobbers BBC with funding cut

London, Jan 17: UK Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries has announced that the broadcasting channel BBC’s funding would be frozen for the next two years and its license abolished in 2027.
According to The Independent, this announcement came amid a reported plot, dubbed Operation Red Meat, to stop Boris Johnson’s premiership being engulfed by the No 10 parties’ scandal.
Following Dorries’ announcement on Sunday, Lucy Powell, the shadow culture secretary said, “The prime minister thinks those reporting on his rule-breaking should pay consequences, whilst he gets off free.”
Ian Murray, the shadow Scottish secretary also said that the announcement was a “last-ditch attempt to save his failing premiership”.
A number of Tory MPs would be demanding resignation of Johnson amid people’s anger over allegations of the UK PM holding party in Westminster while Covid-19 restrictions were in place.
There have been reports that up to 35 of the 54 letters needed to trigger a vote of no confidence are already in, though the actual number is a closely guarded secret, The Guardian reported.
Earlier, Labour leader Keir Starmern said it was “obvious” that Johnson “broke the law [and] then lied about what happened”.
Last week, the UK PM had admitted that the ‘bring-you-own-booze’ party he attended at No 10 on May 20, 2020, was against the Covid-19 norms.
This was despite his earlier claims that no parties were held during the lockdown.
