JAMMU, May 20: Tawi Welfare Society (TWS) today appealed to the concerned departments to undertake immediate repair, strengthening and protection work of the severely damaged approach/ pillar of Nikki Tawi Bridge, warning that any further delay may lead to a major tragedy during the forthcoming rainy season.
In a representation addressed to the deputy Chief Minister, the president of TWS, Kavi Raj expressed grave concern over the deteriorating condition of the bridge, which suffered extensive damage during the floods and heavy rains of last year.
He stated that despite repeated requests and representations made to the concerned authorities, including the Chief Engineer and Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department, no substantial restoration or protection work has been carried out so far.
The Society highlighted that the bridge is a crucial lifeline for thousands of residents of the Tawi Island area and adjoining localities who depend upon it daily for transportation, emergency movement, education, healthcare and other essential activities.
“The damaged portion of the bridge, particularly the last span, continues to remain highly unsafe and vulnerable. During the devastating floods of 26th August 2025, the bridge had narrowly escaped collapse,” they said and warned that with the monsoon season now approaching rapidly, continuous rainfall and strong water currents may further weaken the already damaged structure, posing a serious threat to human lives and public property.
Appealing for urgent intervention, the Society requested the Dy CM to treat the matter on top priority and issue immediate directions to the concerned departments for restoration and protection works before the onset of heavy rains.
