JAMMU, Dec 24: A team of doctors headed by Dr Dinesh Gupta, Prof & Head and Dr Sanjay Kai, Associate Professor from upgraded department of Ophthalmology, Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu performed for the first time two successful Corneal Transplantation (Keratoplasty) surgeries after getting registered with the competent authority of Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir for Corneal Transplantation.
The two blind persons on which the surgeries were conducted, were Parsa Ram and Manisha. Eyes for the surgeries were donated by the contribution of Jammu Ophthalmic Society which facilitated and transported these from Bhuneshwar after recommendation of National Corneal Distribution Centre, which only recommends for supply of the Eye for the blind people to the registered Corneal Transplant Centre only.
It is pertinent to mention here that already six such surgeries have been conducted in past also. Dr Sunanda Raina, Principal & Dean, GMC Jammu has appealed the public and society to come forward for generous donation for the said noble cause as Rs 6000 is the minimal cost of handling and transportation of eye from the corneal centre across the country required for such surgeries.
Further, she stressed various social organizations as well as medical societies/doctors from the medical fraternity to join with the said cause, so that the blind people from the society are benefited at large.
Dr Dinesh Gupta said that the expertise already exists in GMC Jammu, the only need is to create public awareness on this account.
