Thousands attend funeral of cops

SRINAGAR, June 12: Two policemen were killed and one critically injured after militants attacked a Police Post guarding the New Court complex in Pulwama district of South Kashmir while 10 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were injured when militants hurled a hand grenade in Anantnag this morning.

A group of militants opened fire on a Police Post at Takiya Wagam opposite to Government Degree College Pulwama near Barpora Kareemabad in Pulwama district last night. Two security guards were killed on the spot and one of the cop Manzoor Ahmad who was injured, was shifted to SMHS hospital for treatment.
Militants after carrying out the deadly attack decamped with two service rifles of the slain cops. Security forces immediately cordoned off the area and conducted massive searches but no one was arrested.
The deceased cops have been identified as Selection Grade Constables Ghulam Rasool and Ghulam Hassan Wagay. A wreath laying ceremony of the martyred cops was earlier in the day held at District Police Lines Pulwama. The ceremony was led by Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, SP Pani. Officers from both the police as well as civil administration were present during the ceremony, paying their homage to the slain policemen.
Thousands of people this afternoon attended the last rites of martyred policeman of Wohlutra Panzala, Rafiabad in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
Thousands of mourners across Rafiabad, including men and women assembled in Wohlutra Rafiabad, native village of Ghulam Hassan Wagay who was killed in the Pulwama attack.
Pall of gloom descended on the village as the news about death of Wagay spread in the area. Large number of men and women gathered at the residence of deceased.
Locals said that the deceased was at times leading Friday prayers in local Mosque. They said that the deceased was the only breadwinner of the family members of 10 including 3 children and aged parents. Father and one son of the Wagay are handicapped and are bedridden.
Large number of people also attended last rites of another cop Ghulam Rasool Lone at Gagal Lolab in Kupwara district this afternoon. Lone left behind a distraught family comprising his ailing parents, wife and three children, who are all students.
“My husband was simply earning his livelihood and taking care of us. Was that his crime? What have the killers achieved now by killing him? Who will feed these orphans now?”, asks Halima Bagum, 28, deceased’s wife.
Azhar Rasool, the younger son of killed constable is a student of 7th class, while as his another son Basit Rasool is student of 1st class and his daughter Misbah Rasool is studying in 4th standard.
Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti strongly condemned the killing of two policemen. In a statement, she described the act as highly reprehensible which was committed in a night during which the entire Muslim Ummah was seeking forgiveness from Allah (SWT).
Mehbooba cautioned people against such incidents which have the potential of depriving them from the gains of the peace moves like suspension of security operations and dialogue offer undertaken by the State and Central Governments recently. She asked people to stand guard of the positivity generated by these peace moves on the ground which has given them ample relief and ease.
The Chief Minister has conveyed her sympathies to the bereaved families of the martyred cops while praying for peace to the departed souls.
And 10 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were injured when militants hurled a hand grenade at Janglat Mandi in Anantnag this morning.
Militants hurled a hand grenade on CRPF party at Janglat Mandi in Anantnag town resulting in injuries to 10 personnel. The injured were admitted to hospital, the area was cordoned off and searches were launched to nab the militants responsible for the attack.
The injured CRPF men have been identified as Panda Ram son of Umbar Ram, Boota Singh son of Roop Singh, Subash son of Kadhi Nath, Vijay Kumar son of Sridoma, Narveer Singh son of Sri Ram, Jeet Ram son of Bari Singh, Manbinder son of Tarapato, Ramdan son of Narajan, Hari Shankar son of Janardan and Porna Chandra son of Lakhraman.
Security forces today averted a major tragedy by detecting an IED in Awantipora area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district. A patrolling party of CRPF detected the IED alongside the link road at Kazinagh. The Bomb Disposal Squad was immediately called and it was defused. It was a low-intensity IED weighing about 2.5 kgs.
