JAMMU, July 16: The Jammu and Kashmir ex-services League and Subedar Krishna Singh Jamwal Memorial Welfare Committee besides other ex-servicemen and civil society paid tribute to Late Subedar Krishna Singh Jamwal, of 8 JAK RIFLES at Shradhanjali Sthal at Udhampur.
On the occasion, Dalbir Singh Bhatyal, vice president Indian ex-services League while paying tribute said that Subedar Krishna Singh Jamwal (VrC) was martyred in Krishna Ghati, Poonch while protecting the region against Pakistan-led tribal invasion. He was born in village Uralian of district Udhampur. After completing his formal education, he joined the State forces and became a member of the 8th J&K Rifles.
Pak Army in 1947 attempted to capture Indian territory in the Poonch sector and in this process they captured Indian picket No 12. To recapture the picket, a small group of Indian Army was deputed by Captain Kripal Singh, Company Commander of 8th J&K Rifles under the command of Subedar Krishna Singh Jamwal.
The group came into action at midnight of July 15/16, 1948, and tried to recapture the occupied picket. A fierce fight took place between the Indian forces led by Krishna Singh and the Pak-led tribals. Ultimately the picket was recaptured by the Indian troops but unfortunately, Subedar Krishan Singh along with Sepoy Bua Ditta lost their lives while fighting and safeguarding the Indian territory.
The Government of India recognized their exemplary sacrifice and decorated both brave soldiers with Vir Chakra, the second-highest gallantry wartime award in 1948.
Later, the place where the brave soldiers lost their lives was titled Krishna Ghati in the Poonch sector as a mark of respect to the martyrs.
The village Uralian where the valiant soldier was born was now popularly known as Mata Maha Maya Goan –Uralian. Further, a committee was constituted by the martyr’s relatives and residents of the village named Krishna Singh Jamwal Memorial Welfare Committee to serve those martyrs who had laid down their lives for the sake of the nation.
