How tragic that the life of a 22-year old MBA second semester student, Vinod Singh Manhas at Bhaderwah Campus of Jammu University could not be saved owing to lack of life saving drugs and oxygen cylinder. The student complained of chest pain and suspected of heart arrest, his colleagues and friends at the college lodged massive protest against non-availability of life saving drugs with the hospitals. But more than the absence of the medical staff in the sub-district hospital added to the anger of the student community.
One cannot say whether timely and proper medical assistance would have saved the precious life or not, that is a different question and we shall not take it up for discussion. What is of vital interest is the question of dereliction of duty on the part of the doctor and the attendants? Secondly, why did the administration decline to meet the demand of the students that the dead body is ferried to his native place while the IAF offers to lift the body in their chopper? The State has many choppers that are generally used by VIPs for political purpose. But here was a humanitarian issue in which a student’s life was involved. The human element was missing with the administration. Now that the Development Commissioner has ordered inquiry into the tragedy, the students of Bhaderwah campus of Jammu University should fully cooperate with the authorities to bring out the facts of the case. If it is proved that the absence of the medical team from the District Medical Branch on the night of 12-13 March was unauthorized then the indicted persons should be arrested under the law, charge sheeted and the case should proceed against them till it reaches the logical conclusion. They must bear the consequences of a grave act of negligence.
