SRINAGAR, June 11: With absence of women cops, Traffic Department which is manned only by males finds it difficult to deal with erring female drivers and riders in the city.
On city’s busy roads, men in blue have to deal with thousands of female drivers and scooty riders, which at times create trouble both for traffic cops, because of the sensitive nature of the society.
Superintendent, Traffic Police Srinagar, Haseeb-ur-Rehman said there was no female cop available in the Traffic Police Department to deal with female drivers and riders.
“When women drivers, especially young girls, are stopped for wrong driving or lack of safety measures like- helmet, carrying three pillions and rush driving, it has been witnessed that a huge crowd gathers around to disturb the surroundings, which is not good for the situation in Kashmir.”
He said some times young girls cry and faint when traffic cops stop them for violating traffic rules.
As per police records the female scooty riders registered with them have crossed more than five-thousand the city alone apart from other thousands of female vehicle owners.
A top official of the traffic police said that they have approached State Government to recruit female cops, but there was no response from the Government so far.
However, SP said to avoid any untoward incident the Traffic Department has launched a massive awareness programme in colleges and schools about traffic safety measures and rules.
“We have shot off letters to the heads of schools and colleges in Srinagar urging them to prepare a report on the number of girl students who ride scooty, and many of them have not still attained the age of 18 and don’t have a licence,” he said, adding parents of these young girls would be called for counseling.
