SRINAGAR: Traffic on the national highway, connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, has been restored after disruption due to landslides on Tuesday evening while historic Mughal road remained closed due to accumulation of snow and slippery road condition.
The national highway, linking the Ladakh region with Kashmir remained closed while one-way traffic will continue on the road between Bandipora to border town of Gurez, surrounded by Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK). Traffic on 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was suspended on Tuesday evening due to fresh landslides at Peerha under police station Chanderkote. However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintainance of the highway immediately put in service sophisticated machines and men and cleared all landslides.
Traffic was later restored after several hours. On Wednesday, light vehicles will ply from both Jammu and Srinagar, a traffic police official said.
However, heavy vehicles will ply from Jammu to Srinagar only and no heavy vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction.
“The 86-km-long Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region remained closed due to accumulation of snow and slippery road condition.
Though snow clearance operation was launched but due to below freezing temperature the road has become very slippery, almost impossible to resume traffic before April”, he said.
The Ladakh highway also remained closed due to accumulation of snow and slippery road condition between Sonamarg on this side of the Zojila pass to Meenmarg.
However, traffic between Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia to Leh via border town of Kargil was open. The road will reopen only in April-May.
The road to border town of Gurez from Bandipora was also through for one-way traffic only. Today vehicles will ply from Girez to Bandipora, an official of Bandipora Police Control Room (PCR) said over phone.
He said that no vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction to prevent any accident or traffic jam.
