JAMMU, Aug 7: Frequent disruption in power supply and traffic chaos in the Jammu city subjected people from all walks of life to much inconvenience on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan today.
There was unprecedented traffic congestion and vehicular jams in various parts of the Jammu city, particularly old city, Janipur and Talab Tillo-Bakshi Nagar areas  this afternoon while frequent power failures were witnessed throughout the day since this morning.
Mismanagement on part of the Traffic Department, sudden rush of plying vehicles, roadside parking and encroachment of roads by the shopkeepers at various points led to vehicular congestion with the result that traffic was seen either jammed or moving at snail’s pace on the city roads.
On the New Plot-Janipur High Court road, there was huge traffic jam for around two  hours since 12 noon and the similar chaotic scenes were witnessed on the road of Talab Tillo, Old City, Bakshi Nagar etc.
A number of people, including women and children, were seen marching on foot to reach their destinations as the traffic chaos continued for hours together. The situation forced some sister and brothers to miss the auspicious timing of tying the holy thread.
Interestingly, there was almost complete absence of any Traffic cop on the roads with vehicular congestion and civilians were seen trying their best to get the blockades open for movement of vehicles.
This chaotic situation in some areas continued around 2 pm and the sudden rush of vehicle could  be gauged   from the fact that traffic on flyovers was also seen moving very slowly.
Frequent power failures and disruption of supply in various localities throughout the day since morning was another major inconvenience, which the people of Jammu had to face on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.
Even as in comparison to previous years, there was little  use of Chinese string in kite flying on the occasion of  Raksha Bandhan today, there was no let up in frequent power failures while  Power Development Department linemen were found busy rectifying the ‘Kite faults’.
“Despite a ban on Chinese string and much strictness by the district administration in this regard, the prohibited thread was still being used by some people in kite flying today and this caused the power supply to trip whenever it touched electric wires,” claimed a PDD official.
Despite repeated attempts, the Chief Engineer PDD could not be approached for his comment.
