Srinagar, Mar 31: Ahead of by-polls in Anantnag Parliamentary constituency, security forces today achieved a major success as a top Hizbul Muj-ahideen commander from Anantnag district surrendered.
Sources said that Amir Nabi Wagay, most wanted militant and district commander of Anantnag district for Hizbul Mujahideen surrendered today before the Police. They said that his surrender was facilitated by the Counter Insurgency Kashmir (CIK).
A police official said that Amir was suffering from kidney failure and doctors had advised him dialyses. He said that he was involved in the grenade throwing incidents in South Kashmir and various other militant activities. He had joined militancy on August 16, 2014 and was active since then.
However, sources said that in the official records he has been shown arrested by the Special Operations Group of Jammu and Kashmir Police and 1-Rashtriya Rifles from whose operational area he was hailing from.
His surrender comes at a time when police is asking the local youth who have joined militancy to leave the path of violence and come to the mainstream. The surrender comes when militant posters are appearing in South Kashmir to boycott the polls.
In the meantime, Inspector General of Central Reserve Police Force, Ravideep Sahi told reporters here that there is surge in militant activities in Kashmir as it is sponsored by Pakistan. “Yes there has been a surge in the attacks in recent past and reason being the neighbouring country is sponsoring terrorism here and the local youths are also joining in large number”, he said.
Sahi said that Pakistan is behind the social media instigation of local youth in Kashmir. “It is true and the local youths are being misguided and misled through the false propaganda of various social media and we are aware of it and we will take appropriate action”, he said.
The IG CRPF said it is unfortunate and disturbing trend that youth are pelting stones at the security forces during counter-insurgency operations. “It is a very disturbing trend that of late, civilians are coming closer to the encounter sites particularly the youth and they are pelting stones when legitimate counter insurgency operations are going on which is very unfortunate”, he said.
Sahi said that these youth are risking their lives by coming near the encounter sites and advised them to stay away. “And because when the encounter is going on, you don’t know which bullet is going where? This is risking their own life. Even our own security personnel, they are always conscious and they are always behind a bullet proof bunker or in a proper cover. If the youth come very close to the encounter site, there is all chance that a stray bullet can go anywhere and we are aware of it and we will try to stop them. It is my request to the youth that they should follow the law and the law of land and if there are restrictions around the encounter, they should not come close”, he said.
The CRPF officer said that they are alert and working in close coordination with police and Army.
