Thrust on Horticulture sector

Sir,
Refer news item, ‘Substantial efforts on, to revamp, revitalize horticulture sector’ DE April 19.
Horticulture sector is one of essential components of the State’s economy. A large number of people are associated with it for their livelihood. This sector needs further thrust to make it more competitive and vibrant. The Government must study the problems facing the sector in a scientific manner, and redress the issues on a priority basis. It must involve all stakeholders viz farmers, agriculture scientists and bureaucracy. There is tremendous potential for horticulture in Jammu Division, particularly in Kandi  areas where different kinds of fruit trees have potential to grow. The farmers whether in Leh, Jammu or Kashmir face storage and marketing problems.
The apricot industry in Ladakh division has not reached  its full potential. The farmers there are  a disappointed lot as they do not get proper price for their produce.
It is appreciated that the Minister for Horticulture has asked the authorities to introduce accountability, transparency and efficiency in regulation of marketing by holding elections to the marketing committees. The reforms initiated in this sector can go a long way in improving it.
Yours etc…
