Srinagar, Apr 28: At least four persons were killed after a vehicle they were travelling in met with an accident near Gagangeer, Sonamarg in Ganderbal district today. Two individuals are still missing while two have been taken to Srinagar’s SKIMS hospital for treatment, officials said.

A vehicle carrying tourists from Sonamarg to Srinagar met with an accident near Hung area of Gagangeer.
He said that the vehicle skidded off the road and fell into the river Sindh. Among nine persons traveling in the vehicle, four persons died on the spot while two others have been rescued and taken to the hospital.
An official said that soon after receiving information about the incident, a wide scale rescue operation was jointly launched by Police, Army’s 34 Assam Rifles, Traffic Rural Police, Civil administration, locals, SDRF and NDRF, which yielded retrieval of four bodies.
“All the persons boarding the vehicle except for the driver were tourists,” the official said, adding, “except for him (driver) no one other person has been rescued safely up to now.”
“Due to ongoing heavy rains in the area, the operation has been called off till tomorrow,” the official added.

Two more persons are still missing while the driver who was also injured in the accident was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The injured have been identified as Nima Pasang Sherpa son of Kale Sherpa of Nepal and Sameer Ahmad son of Sageer Ahmad of Uttar Pradesh. The driver has been identified as Muhammad Saleem Mir son of Abdul Rashid Mir of Nillah Najwan.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha has expressed grief over the loss of lives in a road accident in Sonamarg.
In a condolence message, the Lt Governor said: “I am deeply saddened to learn about the loss of precious lives in an unfortunate road accident in Sonamarg, Ganderbal today. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. I have issued instructions to the District Administration to render all necessary assistance, as provided in rule, to the affected persons”.
