JAMMU, Feb 6: Considered to be one of the best works of playwright Samuel Beckett, the play ‘Endgame’ was performed in NIFT 2020, the ongoing international theatre festival, by Jammu’s theatre group Rangyatri at the Abhinav Theatre, here today.
Endgame, the representative example of the Theatre of Absurd, which emerged as a corollary to the existentialism believed that that life was absurd, beyond human rationality, meaningless. The play’s plot which revolves around four characters, reiterates the conception of circularity and non-meaning in life.
Directed and designed Mushtaq Kak, today’s production, an adaptation, was marked with a minimal set comprising of bleak looking grayish space enclosed by a big wall with two windows. The central character Hamm sits in a wheel chair while Clove, the servant moves around in repetitive and measured movements. Hamm’s old parents Nag and Nail, sit closeted in barrels.
The Play’s which demands great perseverance from the audience form its highly conceptual content was carried well by the actors who spoke their lines with clarity. Dishasd Sazi as the old father, with his Kashmiri accent and perfect timing, managed to break the monotony of the otherwise dreary dialogues. The cast comprised of Mohit Mehra as Hamm (Choudhary), Aayan Ali as Clove (Gulama), Dilshad Shazi as Nag and Irfana Bano as Nail.
Background score design was by Aman Sangral, make-up by Shivdev Singh, stage manager was Mohit Singh Chib and assistant director of the production was Mohit Mehra.
Tomorrow, UjaagarAssociation from Rajasthan will present ‘Kasoomal Sapno’ under direction of Ajit Singh Palwant.
