The decennial census exercise

As is fairly known , every ten years a general census of the population of the country is conducted which is extremely important to know as the same has inseparable bearing on shaping the country’s economic policies , planning and numerous developmental schemes as also social and welfare schemes. This mandatory exercise had already fallen due but on account of the outbreak of COVID virus pandemic having its impact for over two full years without a break across the country , it could not be undertaken. Since now there is lot of overall improvement on that count, it could expectedly soon kick-start but with a difference this time in that the use of information technology as well as the conventional mode that of using paper as usual, will be made.
In other words , it will be conducted through the digital mode and the conventional questionnaire form wherein the much required information is collected and perhaps, the entire exercise being done in future only through digital mode cannot be overruled. The respondents, therefore, can have the facility under the digital mode switchover to have the self enumeration which entails as such an amendment in the Census Rules which has already been made by the Government. Peculiarity about this exercise undertaken on decennial basis is , looking to the size of the country, requiring hundreds of thousands of employees just like recently undertaken vaccination drive across the country in respect of fighting the COVID pandemic or the general elections held every five years thus imparting due importance to conducting census. This census hopefully will thus look into the requirements in respect of updating of National Population Register (NPR) and have such a database secured for future references.
