Temps plummet, parts of Dal lake freeze

Srinagar, Dec 19: The temperatures across Kashmir remained subzero leading to freezing of parts of Dal lake and other water bodies with Leh recording the coldest minimum temperature of the season at minus 13.8 degree Celsius.
As the night temperatures continue to be below minus 4 degree Celsius for last few nights, parts of Dal lake and other water bodies were frozen today.
The tapes and water pipes also froze at several places leading to the water crisis in certain areas in the morning. However, as Sun came out there was some relief.
A Meteorological Department official said that dry and cold weather will continue for rest of the week.
The present cold wave conditions are likely to intensify further due to clear night sky.
With continued dry weather conditions and subzero temperatures, the water bodies have started freezing in Kashmir valley ahead of the “Chillai Kalan”, the 40 day chilly period of winter.
Frosty mornings and slippery roads cause problems to pedestrians and motorists in Srinagar city.
Leh recorded the lowest minimum temperature at minus 13.8 degree Celsius while Srinagar was at minus 4.2 degree Celsius. It was minus 5.3 degree Celsius and minus 3.5 in Pahalgam and Gulmarg, respectively.
Qazigund recorded a low of minus 3.8 degree Celsius, Kupwara minus 4.2 degree Celsius, Kokernag minus 3.6 degree Celsius.
Jammu recorded 8.2 degree Celsius, Katra 8.3 degree Celsius, Banihal 1.0 degree Celsius, Batote 4.3 degree Celsius and Bhaderwah 1.5 degree Celsius as the night’s lowest temperature.
Srinagar recorded maximum day temperature of 9.1 degree Celsius while normal day temperature for this time of the year is 9 degree Celsius. Qazigund recorded 10.5 degree Celsius, Pahalgam 9.8 degree Celsius, Kupwara 11.5 degree Celsius, Kokernag 9.8 degree Celsius, Gulmarg 7.2 degree Celsius, Leh 9.7 degree Celsius and Kargil 4.0 degree Celsius.
Jammu recorded a maximum of 21.6 degree Celsius, Katra 19.2 degree Celsius, Banihal 19 degree Celsius, Batote 17.9 degree Celsius and Bhaderwah 15.8 degree Celsius.
