LEH, Sept 19: To highlight the J&K State Water Resources Regulation and Management Act for judicious and sustainable use of water resources, the chairperson, J&K State Water Resources Regulatory Authority, S S Kapoor today took an important meeting with the district administration Leh.
The Deputy Commissioner Leh, Simrandeep Singh, District Superintending Engineer, SR Dogra, Project Director, LREDA, Jigmet Takpa, Executive Engineers, Assistant Executive Engineers and Junior Engineers of all the wings of PWD Leh attended the meeting.
Referring various legal and technical requirements for seeking prior clearance from the State Water Resources Regulatory Authority (SWRRA) for extraction of ground water and usage of other water resources for industrial use, generation of hydroelectric power, irrigation purposes, tubewell system and drinking purposes, SS Kapoor said that this Act came into force in the State in October 2012 to restrict the over exploitation of water resources and promoting responsible usage of water by all stakeholders. He made a mention that from August 1, 2013, the concerned departments and other executing agencies need to submit their projects using water as a resource to the SWRRA for approval.
Mr Kapoor said that Leh is the first district in the State to approach SWRRA seeking approval for 10 mini hydel projects under MNRE scheme. He assured for whole hearted support and cooperation from the Authority in clearing the projects.
DC, Leh, Simrandeep Singh urging the Engineers and other executing agencies to strictly follow the act of SWRRA in the best public interest, also felt the need that apart from water resources, the users should contribute in paying nominal tariff for using other State resources like sand, aggregates etc.
