Swine flu claims one more life in Jammu, toll climbs to 4

JAMMU, Mar 15: As authorities today confirmed one more death due to swine flu in Jammu, the toll due to the dreaded disease in Jammu region has climbed to four.
According to Director Health Jammu, BS Pathania, a 48 year old lady identified as Surjeet Kour wife of Amarjeet Singh, a resident of Upper Gadigarh, Jammu, succumbed to the disease in a private hospital at Ludhiana on March 3.
Explaining in detail, Dr Pathania said that on March 2 the deceased lady was admitted in Isolation Ward of Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu with suspected swine flu symptoms and his swab sample was sent for testing to New Delhi but on the same day the lady absconded from the hospital without intimating hospital authorities.
“The hospital authorities followed the address of the lady and after inquiries it came to fore that the lady was taken to Apollo Hospital, Ludhiana by her family members, where she expired. Meanwhile, on March 6, we received the report of the lady from New Delhi, which was found to be positive for H1N1” the officer said.
He said that at that time they could not confirm the death, as they had not received the death report of the lady from the hospital. “As, the death report of the lady was received yesterday; we can now formally say that she died due to swine flu”, he added.
He further disclosed that 17 more reports were received today by the department out of which four were positive for H1N1 virus while other 13 turned out to be negative.
With these four fresh cases of swine flu, he said a total of 79 patients have so far tested positive for the disease in Jammu region while four people have so far succumbed to the disease in the region.
