MYSURU : Bharatiya Janata Party Leader Subramanian Swamy said former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao was entitled for a Bharat Ratna for transforming the country’s economy. Speaking on ‘Indian economy – Past, Present and Future’ at a lecture programme organised by Manthana at Jaganmohan Palace Auditorium here last night , Dr Swamy praised Mr Rao for ‘dismantling the quota and licenses of the Soviet model’ adopted by the country’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Mr Rao’s economic reforms ensured that the country’s economic growth raced from three per cent to eight per cent an annum during the five years he was in power, Dr Swamy said. Mr. Rao, who was the Prime Minister from 1991 to 1996, should have also got the Bharat Ratna this year. ‘I will ensure that he gets it next year,’ he told the gathering. (AGENCIES)
