Suppression of sales, tax running into several crores detected

State Taxes Deptt searches 9 business premises

JAMMU, June 6: The State Taxes Department detected suppression of sales and evasion of taxes running into crores by nine major business units during inspection and recording of sale and initiated further action against them even as similar surveys were planned for some more units in the next few days.
The business units, whose inspection and sales recording was done, included Billu Di Hatti at Gandhi Nagar and Sunjwan, Zamindara Dhaba at Vijaypur on Jammu-Pathankot National Highway, Papa Di Hatti, Gandhi Nagar, Hotel Naz, Residency Road, Punjabi Brothers, Rehari, Big Bakers, Channi, Royal Bakers, Poonch, Lambad Dhaba, Ware House and Jangi Fish Corner, Gandhi Nagar.
Mohammad Shahid Saleem, Additional Commissioner, State Taxes, Administration & Enforcement, Jammu told the Excelsior that variation in sales running into crores has been detected during surprise inspection and recording of sale of nine business units, conducted by the State Taxes Department under Section 71 of Jammu and Kashmir Goods and Services Tax (GST) Act.
Data collected by the State Taxes Department revealed that Billu Di Hatti having two outlets at Gandhi Nagar and Sunjwan touched the annual sale of around Rs 1.62 crore as it was found to have daily approximate sale of Rs 45,000. However, as per the returns filed by the entity for the year 2018-19, it had declared annual sales at Rs 14.41 lakh only, thus, suppressing sales to the tune of Rs 1.47 crore, a whopping amount.
Zamindara Dhaba located at National Highway near Vijaypur with a daily approximate sale of Rs 55,000 touches the annual sale of Rs 1.98 crore. But, as per returns filed by the Dhaba proprietor for the year 2018-19, they have declared annual sales at Rs 88 lakh. This way, the sale of Rs 1.1 crore has been suppressed.
Papa Di Hatti with its business concern at Gandhi Nagar has daily sale of Rs 30,000, which comes out to Rs 1.08 crore annually. As per the returns filed by this food house for the year 2018-19, the declared sales were shown as Rs 26.84 lakh. The shopkeeper has suppressed sales to the tune of Rs 81.53 lakh.
Hotel Naz at Residency Road was found to have annual sale of Rs 54 lakh. However, their return for the year 2018-19 showed the sale only at Rs 24 lakh while Rs 29 lakh worth sale has been suppressed by the hotelier.
Similarly, Punjabi Brothers having its outlet at Rehari, has daily approximate sale of Rs 31,000 and annual sale of around Rs 1.1 crore but their return for the year 2018-19 has shown the sale as Rs 56.98 lakh only, thus, suppressing of sales to the tune of Rs 53 lakh.
Big Bakers, Channi too have an approximate daily sale of Rs 66,000. With this, their annual sale was pegged at Rs 2.38 crore. However, they have filed return for the year 2018-19 to the tune of Rs 1.91 crore and suppressed sales worth Rs 46 lakh.
Royal Bakers, Poonch too have a daily sale of Rs 25,000 and annual sale of Rs 90 lakh but they too had filed 2018-19 return showing their sales at Rs 24 lakh only and suppressed remaining Rs 66 lakh.
Lambad Dhaba, Warehouse has daily sale of Rs 17,000 but showed less than half in the return i.e. only Rs 8000.
Jangi Fish Corners, Gandhi Nagar paid 1 percent tax instead of Rs 5 percent evading Rs 26 lakh.
Mohammad Shahid Saleem, Additional Commissioner, State Taxes, who supervised the inspection and sale recording operation, said the notices were being issued to all business concerns to immediately deposit tax on remaining amount of sales.
He said the sales of eatables especially the non-vegetarian eatables go up during winter, which would be more than what the Department has detected presently in the months of summer, which indicated that suppression of sale would be more than what has been anticipated at present.
Saleem said inspection of many more business concerns was going on and the Department would come out with more facts very soon.
