It’s that time of the year when keep looking fresh is a problem. Sharmila Chand finds out from experts what works best in the hot season
The heat hovers in the air. Looking good and remaining so throughout the day is a nightmare with most women. But on hindsight, there is no better time to let your natural beauty shine through than in the fresh spring and summer months. With a dash of a little concealer, tinted moisturiser and facial powder, you are ready to go. Matte, velvety textures replace dewy, glowing looks and are hitting it big for Spring / Summer 2013.
Anjum Bhardwaj, faculty, fashion & media make up, at Pearl Academy, Delhi, emphasises colour all the way. “This season is all about colour. Go for bright shades of yellow, blue and green for eyes. Or go completely bold with lip shades from hot pink, neons to bright shades of orange,” she says. The trick is to select one focus area specially while playing with colour, selecting either bright eyes with nude lips or bright lips with subtle eye makeup.
But one does not have to restrict colours only to lips and eyes. In fact, bright, neon shades of nail lacquers are quite in vogue. “Matching your lipstick with nails is hot this season. Chrome yellow, electric purple, neon orange, lime colours look very trendy and chic, ” Bhardwaj says.
This is the time of the year when application of foundation should be minimal so that the skin looks fresh, dewy and luminous. One can go for BB creams i.e. beauty or blemish creams as they are quite a trend this season. With an all-in-one cosmetic product including moisturiser, primer, foundation and sunblock, it is a handy product and easy to use.
For the cheeks, Bhardwaj suggests highlights to be kept soft with hint of baby pinks and peaches for the day and bronze for the night. Those who love their eyes smoky, can opt for soft browns instead of intense black. The lines are to be kept soft and blended. Be it any season, anytime of the year, mascara is a must. Coloured mascaras in blue, purple, green look hot and trendy and for those less experimental ones, brown and black are always an option.
Summer is the time to show off dresses and coordinated ensembles. But melting makeup, dropping eyeliner, and sticky lipstick are not a very welcome way to enjoy the heat, observes Samantha Kochhar, MD, Blossom Kochhar Beauty Products.
In hot weather, makeup should be as simple and comfy as putting on the favourite pair of jeans and flip-flops, she says. But the heat and humidity are a challenge, so one has to make a note of a few little changes to the make up routine.
The essential can’t-miss list:
For the lips, go for the matte finish in bright lip colours.
The adventurous touch : Dab your make-up brushes in shades of turquoise and vibrant aqua. The look is not supposed to be too wild or extreme for every day wearer. Try a thin streak of green eyeliner or a smear of sapphire or a colour blocking royal blue. To add glamour for the evenings, place a few sparkles around the eyes.
Simple proves to be most striking: Fresh, natural skin provides the perfect backdrop for the season’s best looks.
Good skincare goes a long way. Put a light primer underneath makeup and dab a highlighter on the high points of your face. Rim your eyes with a glossy lip treatment. Just dab it around the perimeter and finish with properly defined eyebrows and mascara for a lush glow. Light pink blush on the cheeks and shined up lips with clear gloss.
The eyeliner effect : Ever since the cat-eye trend hit last year, eyeliner has become essential. While they can be retro flicked up, there is a new trend, a tight outline, softly smudged. This look can be worn during the day. For the evenings, swipe a platinum shadow over the lids, to create a contrast. An easy way to inspire for how dressing up in a few simple strokes for day to night.
Lush Lashes : It’s time to have fun with your lashes, from twiggy lashes to curled and combed lashes with the waterline filled in white.
“Do not ignore the primer,” advises Kochhar . Spending a few seconds to smoothen on a primer after the moisturiser is put before face makeup goes a long way to hold on the make up and is definitely the right way to go in the summer.
“Make sure to play with colours smartly and in small doses so that you do not end up looking like a clown!” is Bhardwaj’s final verdict. (TWF)
