JAMMU, Apr 5: Irate activists of BJP and farmers of about 15 villages in Mishriwala belt led by former Minister and senior party leader, Choudhary Sukhnandan Kumar today blocked the Akhnoor road near Mishriwala in protest against the dismantling of a tributary of Ranbir Canal supplying the irrigation water to various villages of the area.
Addressing the protestors, Sukhnandan accused the authorities working on four lanning of Akhnoor road of playing with the interests of thousands of farmers of the area who will get badly affected with the dismantling of the Ranbir Canal tributary supplying the water to farmers of the belt.
The protestors shouting slogans against the authorities entrusted with the four lanning of Akhnoor road alleged that they were working with their sweet will. Sukhanandan said some days back District Development Commissioner, Jammu during his visit to the area gave instructions of completing the restoration work of Ranbir canal on war footing basis so that the water is released in the Canal and the farmers who need irrigation water for their crops do not suffer. While work of restoration of canal is going on, the authorities working on four lanning of Akhnoor road have dismantled a tributary of the canal supplying irrigation water to various villages of Mishriwala area which has created a panic among the farmers who need water for their crops badly. He said in case the tributary will be dismantled then the farmers of the area will be completely affected and this can’t be tolerated.
He demanded that the portion of tributary damaged be restored immediately and water be released in the canal on the stipulated time and date so that the farmers will heave a sigh of relief failing which they will be forced to launch agitation.
Sukhnandan said that when the issue was taken up with the irrigation authorities they failed to intervene in the matter saying the constructing agencies of Akhnoor road do not cooperate with them which is a matter of serious concern.
