LEH, Dec 16: The ongoing students hunger strike led by Students Organisation of Unified Ladakh (SOUL) was called off today following the deteriorating health condition of the agitating student especially girls.
SOUL President Rigzin Dorjay said that they have to call off the strike due to health problems of number of students, however they refused to remove the tent. He added that if nothing happens within two days time, they will again start the hunger strike. He also added that next time they will request all religious body to join them.
Dorjay said that it was -17 degree in Ladakh these days and it was very difficult for them during night. He added that all the students couldn’t sleep due to space limitation in the tent so most of the students had to stay awake during night and many girls were hospitalized. He expressed anguish over no physical support from religious and politicians in the time of need. He added that it was their duty to ask the ruling party about the protection of Ladakh to which students were termed as politically motivated and that student had nothing to do with politics.
SOUL Advisor Stanzin Tsetan said since the protest is done by students therefore no questions of politics involvement in it.
While responding to media query, LBA President PT Kunzang said that they have supported the students’ protest however more discussion is needed by involving all stakeholders including Kargil leaders to seek way forwards for the safeguard of Ladakh region.
Similarly Anjuman Moin-Ul-Islam President Dr Abdul Qayoom and Anjuman Imamiya President Ashraf Ali Barcha also assured support to the students for the safeguard and empowerment of Hill Council.
He added MP offered them juice and bread to the student leader Rigzin Dorjay but they refused to break the hunger strike saying that unless MP issues some recommendation letter to Hill Council to act on some concrete decision to safeguard Ladakh land, environment and identity, the students refused to break their hunger strike.
