SRINAGAR, July 11: The Maisuma locality observed a strike today against the detention of a youth. The youth namely Roman Yousuf was arrested by police on Tuesday evening and his arrest led to minor stone pelting in the Maisuma area.
As the shopkeepers of the area were about to open their shops this morning, a group of youth appeared in the area and asked the shopkeepers to down their shutters. Within no time there was strike in the Maisuma area and the business activities came to a grinding halt. However, the day passed off peacefully and there was no stone pelting incident in the area.
Roman Yousuf alias Aashkee of Maisuma was arrested by the police on Tuesday evening while he was sitting with his friends at Pratap Park in Srinagar city. Some of the reports suggest that Roman is a known stone-pelter and was arrested by the police in 2010 for his involvement in stone pelting. He was a close confidante of JKLF chairman, Mohammad Yaseen Malik and has recently joined ranks of People’s Political Party (PPP) led by Engineer Hilal War.
Meanwhile, Hilal War has expressed concern and anguish over the arrest of Roman and said that police have launched a fresh drive to arrest and harass youths from different parts of Srinagar City especially Maisuma and down-town areas of Srinagar City.
