Start work on Zojila Tunnel, set up University in Ladakh: Feroz Khan

JAMMU, Nov 16: Chief Executive Councillor, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil, Feroz Ahmed Khan today demanded that work on Zojila Tunnel be commenced without any more delay and an independent University be set in Ladakh region as thousands of students from Kargil and Leh districts are forced to pursue their higher studies in Jammu, Chandigarh, Delhi and other places.
Addressing as press conference here today, CEC LAHDC Kargil, said that he along with his three Executive Councillors- Zahir Hussain, Nasir Hussain and Tashi Phunsog met the Governor S P Malik here on Thursday and projected their issues before him. He said this new LAHDC Kargil which came into existence recently, has come out here to strongly project burning issues of Ladakh region.

Khan pointed out that though Ladakh is separate region, yet it has been made part of Kashmir Division. He said problems of Kashmir are different and Ladakh people have separate issues. Its geographical conditions are also different. He demanded that Ladakh be given Divisional status like Kashmir and Jammu with full powers. He also demanded separate University for Ladakh as thousands of students from this region are forced to pursue higher studies in Jammu, Srinagar, Chandigarh and Delhi.
The CEC claimed that Zojila Tunnel is the decades old demand of the people from Ladakh region. One private company has been allotted the work and Prime Minister had laid its foundation stone some time back. But it has been learnt that this Company has turned bankrupt and it is unlikely to carry on the work. He urged upon the Governor’s Administration to make some arrangements to avoid retender of this tunnel project to save time over run and complete this tunnel as early as possible. He also urged upon the BRO/GREF authorities to intensify search for a boy from Kargil who recently went missing from Zojila area during recent heavy snowfall.
Feroz Khan further demanded special air-service from Kargil to other places like Srinagar and Jammu during winter months as Srinagar- Leh road remains closed due to heavy snowfall in Zojila area of the region for 4-5 months. Nassir Hussain, EC also spoke on the occasion.
