JAMMU, Apr 10: The wheels of entire State Road Transport Corporation fleet came to grinding halt as nearly 3500 employees and workers of the Corporation went on strike across the State today.
The operation of Inter State buses and also between Jammu-Srinagar and Jammu-Katra remained suspended as the employees and workers of the Corporation went on strike. The workers led by president of SRTC  Workers Union  assembled in the office of Managing Director at Rail Head  Complex here and held protest demonstration. A large number of  drivers and conductors also joined.
State president of the SRTC Workers Union Ashok Mehra and general secretary Paramjit Singh were leading. The workers mounted on the buses and held protest against the Management of the SRTC. They alleged that DPC of the workers was held but many deserving employees were ignored. They also demanded that as per promise by the Government, SRTC should be provided adequate space at TRC Srinagar for operation of SRTC fleet and other facilities for the passengers.
They alleged that the management of the Corporation has failed to resolve the  pending issues of the workers. They pointed out that drivers engaged on daily rate of Rs 200 are also facing exploitation. Instead of 8 hour duty they are even working for more than 10 or 12 hours on inter-State routes but they are not being paid any extra wages but if they take one day halt their money is deducted.
In Srinagar also strike was observed by the employees under the leadership of Shakeel Ahmed Kuchey. Mr Kuchey alleged that all the city services besides Jammu-Srinagar operation of vehicles remained suspended and employees at headquarters observed  strike. Workshops employees observed strike two days back and inter disrtrict bus service and trucks remained off the road yesterday. He said there is no facility at TRC Srinagar and entire 20 kanal of  SRTC land has been forcibly taken over by the Government for Tehzeeb Mahal which is no where in sight.  He alleged that hardly one kanal land has been provided to SRTC for operation at TRC and there was no facility for booking clerks, staff and passengers. Hardly 45- vehicles can be parked and no toilet facility  was there for passengers. He said that employees would intensify strike in near future.
