SRINAGAR, Jan 23: After a spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in Kashmir, there has been a surge in deaths with five people including a religious scholar and Professor succumbing to the viral infection and 4499 testing positive.
Those who died include Syed Saifuddin Bukhari, 70, renowned religious scholar and former Professor at Islamic University of Science and Technology. Professor Bukhari of Dharmuna Budgam was suffering from COVID-19 and was admitted at Chest Diseases Hospital Srinagar for the last several weeks.
The others include Abdul Majeed Khan, 60, of Kupwara who was a comorbid and suffering from bilateral pneumonia and was undergoing treatment at SKIMS Soura; Rehmee Begum of Sopore who was comorbid and was being treated at GMC Baramulla; Rehti Begam, 80, of Budgam who had a stroke and was also suffering from pneumonia and was undergoing treatment at SMHS hospital Srinagar and 60-year old Fata Mohammad Gania who was suffering from Gall bladder cancer besides pneumonia and was being treated at SKIMS Soura.
With these fresh deaths, the number of casualties in J&K has gone up to 4605 including 2357 in Kashmir.
Kashmir reported 4499 COVID-19 positive cases, taking the overall tally of positive cases in Jammu and Kashmir to 397202.
Those who tested positive include 1464 from Srinagar, Baramulla 564, Budgam 590, Pulwama 150, Kupwara 344, Anantnag 578, Bandipora 261, Ganderbal 320, Kulgam 174 and Shopian 54.
Today, 2493 COVID-19 patients recovered during including 1496 from Kashmir. So far 349731 people have recovered, leaving active case tally at 42866 including 29633 in Kashmir.
