SPCB conducts surprise check

JAMMU, July 14: J&K State Pollution Control Board with Traffic Police Department, has intensified drive against vehicular pollution and in this connection, vehicles without Pollution under Control Certificates were challaned.
In a day long checking, 48 vehicles were inspected at Satwari to Gandhi Nagar road and 19 of them were challaned for violation of pollution norms. Pollution Checking Centres were also inspected to ascertain the efficiency of their equipments for issuing certificate to the vehicles.
PCB also monitored noise level on the road and penalty was imposed on spot to defaulters. Average noise level is  increasingly high in the range of 82 decibel exceeding the standards of 65 decibel because of pressure horns used by the vehicles, said a handout issued by the PCB.
PCB with Transport Department has conducted inspections of Pollution Checking Centres across Jammu Province and during inspection it has been observed that out of total 40 pollution checking centres 37 were found operational and 3 centres were closed. It was found that most of these centres need up-gradation of equipments for checking. The list of defaulters along with other recommendations has been forwarded to Transport Department for legal course of action.
According to J N Sharma, Regional Director, J&K Pollution Control Board disclosed that vehicular pollution is a primary cause of air pollution in urban areas emitting 60-70 percent of total air pollutants such as CO, HC, NOX, SOX which is carcinogenic and have adverse impact on the health and well being of population. He explained that Pollution Control Board was  making efforts to bring the air pollution level under control and action plan in this regard has been prepared along with  other departments such as Motor Vehicle Department, Town Planning, JMC, R&B, agencies supplying fuel and district administration. This will surely ease out the problem of air pollution caused due to vehicular pollution.
Er J N Sharma along with the team comprising Kuldeep Bhan I/C Vehicular Monitoring, Nasir-ud-Din Sheikh, besides Divisional Officer PCB Jammu North Er T S Chib, Er   Anupam Kaul, Er Sanjay Rathore and   Deepak Mattoo were present during the surprise check along with sleuths of Traffic Police.
