JAMMU, Oct 13: An institutional visit was organised for the students of Department of Law, University of Jammu and Dogra Law College by Gandhi Nagar police station today. Purpose of this visit was to make law students aware about their interaction with police in their professional lives. Various aspects of crime, registration, investigation and trials were discussed in detail.

“Police and lawyers must ensure that a lawful and just society is created around us. The economic and social fabric of every country is dependent on its system of justice. Criminal justice system of India is under heavy obligation to deliver. There are many challenges which hinder swift justice delivery on occasions. But it is the duty of police and lawyers to ensure that the path towards justice for a victim becomes less cumbersome,” Chaudhary said.
He added that every police officer has a territory where he is responsible while a lawyer has entire nation as territory. “Where police ends its story in a crime with filing chargesheet, lawyer steps in. Three persons of law then see the case (defence lawyer, public prosecutor and judge) and decide the fate of any criminal case. Although both work on their own and normally Court is the place where he has to come, finally”.
He further added that many of the students of today will become prosecutors of tomorrow.
The SP emphasised on the point that gender sensitisation is the most important element of both the professions. “Females in distress approach the police first of all and it is moral duty of every policeman that a good listening is provided to every aggrieved person. Registration and investigation of crime must follow. The lawyers are expected to protect the victims in the court of law and ensure justice,” he said.
“The rampant problem of drugs in society is one challenge that the police and lawyers must fight together. Police must ensure thorough investigation and avoid procedural lapses in such cases. Lawyers should try to get the drug dealers convicted in the court of law. It is the criminal justice system that differentiates a civilized society from anarchy. The moral duty of police and lawyers towards is much larger than merely doing their jobs. If the criminal justice system can deliver in timely manner, the society will become better for all,” Chaudhary said.
