JAMMU, Nov 1: To create awareness about the importance of organ donation, State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) J&K started month-long activities, here today.
On the first day, SOTTO J&K organized a mega organ donation awareness walk, which was flagged off by Dr Shashi Sudhan Sharma Principal and Dean Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, flagged off the awareness walk. She was accompanied by Dr Elias Sharma, Nodal Officer, SOTTO J&K and HoD Urology, Super Speciality Hospital Jammu, Dr Sanjeev Puri, Joint Director, SOTTO J&K, Dr Sanjogita Soodan, Deputy Medical Superintendent, Super Speciality Hospital and SOTTO J&K team.
The awareness walk started at 8:30 AM from Maharaja Hari Singh Park Jammu and after passing through Press Club Jammu, via Tawi Bridge 1, Vikram Chowk to Tawi Bridge 2, the walk culminated back at Maharaja Hari Singh Park Jammu.
More than 60 students of various Nursing Colleges along with the faculty participated in the awareness walk. Students encouraged people to donate organs with slogans and quotes written on placards.
Principal Government Medical College Jammu said that one single organ and tissue donor can save or improve the lives of more than eight people, helping to restore eyesight, damaged tissues or vital functions.
Dr Elias Sharma said that the intention of this walk was to reach out to people and spread the message that they should voluntarily come forward and donate organs.
Dr Sanjeev Puri said that in our country people fighting with end stage disease are eagerly waiting for organ transplant. He said for this very purpose, SOTTO J&K has decided to organize the month long organ donation awareness campaign which started today with this awareness walk.
The Nursing Colleges which participated were Rajiv Gandhi College of Nursing, Chak Bhalwal; Stephens College of Nursing, Miran Sahib; Galaxy Paramedical College, Sainik Colony; Government College of Nursing, Gandhi Nagar; Bee Enn College of Nursing, Chak Bhalwal; Bee Enn Nursing Institute, Chak Bhalwal; Government College of Nursing, Gangyal; Acharya Shri Chander College of Nursing Education Sidhra Jammu; Shri Mata Vaishno Devi College of Nursing, Katra and BGSBU Nursing College and School of Nursing and Biomedical Sciences Jammu.
